Anthropology at Sea: Life, Labor, and Global Shipping

What can an anthropology of the sea teach us about global capitalism, infrastructure, and climate transition? In this episode of Antro-podden Marianna Betti, University of Bergen, and Jatin Dua, University of Michigan, reflect on their respective ethnographic field sites on board oil tankers, container ships, and energy carriers. Moving past abstract concepts of supply chains and maritime choke points, they analyze how seafarers experience labor, technological change, and global crises firsthand.
