IUAES congress, Manchester UK, this week
The IUAES2013 congress takes place this coming week at the University of Manchester in Northwest England. With over 210 panels and 1300 delegates from oer 60 countries, it promises to be a stimulating event. If you wish to attend and are yet to register, you may still do so via: http://www.iuaes2013.org.

If you are unable to attend but wish to watch some of the plenary events, then please note that those taking place from Tue-Sat will be streamed live on the website. See http://www.iuaes2013.org/Plenaries.html for more info about these.

As you may already know four associations - EASA, ABA, AAA and CASCA - are organizing an experimental virtual seminar entitled La langue et le savoir anthropologique/language and anthropological knowledge/língua e conhecimento antropológico that aims to build a multilingual environment which minimizes the need for formal translation and interpretation.
See: http://www.iuaes2013.org/Plenaries.html for more information.

The seminar will explore the centrality of language in the production of anthropological knowledge and its political aspects, in two particular ways: as central to the ethnographic encounter and as central to the global circulation of this knowledge.

The format of the seminar is as follows: four scholars representing each association (Bruna Franchetto, Penelope Harvey, Alexandra Jaffe and Christine Jourdan) will make available their papers (in French, English and Portuguese) on a platform to which anyone will have access for a period of about one month, starting October 1, 2013. There will be a live event on October 15, 2013, where four discussants (Omar Ribeiro Thomaz, Benoit de l'Estoile, Salikoko Mufwene, and Petra Rethmann) will comment on the papers. For the next ten days, the chair Miguel Vale de Almeida and moderator Deirdre Meintel will monitor an online written discussion, which can take place in French, English, Portuguese and Spanish. The seminar will be closed formally on October 25th, 2013.
